Don Emilio Syquia, portrayed by the iconic legend Eddie Garcia, was one of the main formidable antagonists in Brothers (Ang Probinsyano). He was the head of the Tuazon Clan, the Founding member of the Drug Syndicates, and the leader of mafia contrabands and illegal drug businesses.
Don Emilio was also the father-in-law of Tomas Tuazon and the grandfather of Joaquin, as well as the leader of the Tuazon family’s human and drug trafficking organization. Years before the storyline of Brothers began, he k!lled Cardo’s biological father, police officer, Pablo de Leon in order to avoid getting found out and captured by the authorities.
It was one of the reasons why Cardo (Coco Martin) wanted revenge on him.Don Emilio was captured by Cardo and convicted for the mürdër of Cardo’s father, SPO4 Pablo de Leon (Tonton Gutierrez). Justice wasn’t served in this instance though: thanks to his ill-gotten wealth and connections, Don Emilio lived a life of luxury in prison before eventually escaping.
He then deployed his henchmen to kidñäp and tørtüre Cardo on an isolated island called Isla Muerte (transl. Death Island). Upon learning of the predicament of our favorite hero, Ramil (Michael de Mesa) and some of Cardo’s friends broke out of jail and successfully rescued him, though two of their companions, Julian (Julio Diaz) and Gener (Jeric Raval), were k!lled.
Cardo’s group then coordinated with Romulo’s (Lito Lapid) Bloody Sun group to form the “Vendetta”. After escaping yet again, Don Emilio continued his illegal businesses with the equally rotten Senator De Silva (Joko Diaz).
Following a couple of unfriendly encounters, Vendetta finally put a stop to Don Emilio and De Silva’s operations after they foiled the tërrør plot to detonate bømbs during a festival. The vigilante group k!lled De Silva before pursuing his partner in crime. Cardo faced off with Don Emilio and presumed him to be dëäd after güññing him down.
After rescuing the incumbent President Oscar Hidalgo (Rowell Santiago) from an assassination plot that led to the dëäths of his family, Cardo and his fellow members of Vendetta strived to find a way to restore Hidalgo back to the presidency so he could finally save the country from the mürdërous grip of Lucas Cabrera (Edu Manzano).
The vigilante group Vendetta had to deal with several armed tërrørist groups, right around the time when Don Emilio reemerged from hiding with a different identity and persona. Obviously, he survived the clash with Cardo’s Vendetta in Baguio, having been saved by an elder who taught him mining and inherited the company.
The aftermath of the previous encounter left Don Emilio wounded and blinded in one eye, and he started wearing an eyepatch. It’s implied to be the result of injuries stemming from his previous encounter with Cardo.
Now going by the name Señor Gustavo Torralba, his newfound criminal empire enjoyed the protection of the Cabrera administration through the auspices of Hipolito.
Señor Gustavo sealed a shady deal with the government: Lucas’ administration would get 50% share of production and in exchange, they would overlook the violations Gustavo’s operations would cause. Gustavo relocated to Santo Niño because the black market wanted diamonds, which was absent at the former mining site.
He acquired the help of Baldo (Rommel Padilla), Javier (Joross Gamboa) and Homer Adlawan (Jhong Hilario) and together, they captured able-bodied men and compelled them to work on the mining site.
Following the interference of Cardo and the members of Vendetta, he k!lled off two of his most trusted acquaintances, Gascon (Ryan Eigenmann) and Madonna (Ivana Alawi) after they betrayed him.
Upon getting wind of Cardo’s presence in Santo Niño, Gustavo fortified his forces and prepared for his long-awaited, inevitable rematch with Cardo and Vendetta. Sporting a more brutal and heartless attitude, he resorted to k!lling some tired and famished slaves.
In no time, Cardo and the members of Vendetta infiltrated the mining site and silently took out some guards. However, an all-out guñfight broke out when the vigilante group was spotted by sentries. Akihiro was k!lled by the slaves, Bruno was k!lled by Rigor, and Tyson was k!lled by Jerome.
Vendetta fought off Gustavo’s men and Cardo mortally wounded Gustavo in a duel. Gustavo was then taken to his helicopter in a desperate attempt to escape. Cardo relentlessly shot down the helicopter and it went up in flames and exploded, finally ending Gustavo’s life once and for all and avenging his father’s death.
As much as anyone can probably recall, Don Emilio/Senõr Gustavo was the most-hated and most wicked villain who graced the Brothers series. One of the oldest characters in the show, second only to Grandma Flora.
Don Emilio had no løvë for his criminal underlings and never hesitated to mürdër them if they screwed up. This only got worse once he assumed the identity of Senõr Gustavo. With both personalities, there was always one thing that never changed – his dark sense of humor and flowery insults: he usually threw one of these in whenever he started gloating to his enemies.
The late Eddie Garcia, who effortlessly portrayed the characters of Don Emilio Syquia and Senõr Gustavo Torralba, is regarded as a legend with his numerous contributions in the movie and entertainment industry.
Affectionately called “Manoy”, his career lasted for seven long decades (70+ years) and never did he once get involved in certain issues and controversies. Throughout his career, he gathered a total of 43 wins and 38 nominations from notable award-giving bodies.
According to reports, the veteran actor got into an accident and suffered a neck fracture during a shoot under the GMA management on June 8, 2019. Garcia was left him in a comatose state and died on June 20, 2019 at the age of 90. May his soul rest in perfect peace!
