Bianca & Gabriel’s Friendship blossoms but a tragedy leads to their separation.
Gabriel feels terrible about Bianca’s situation so he goes to a shop at the market and offers to buy some rubber shoes in exchange for work. The shop owner objects and chases him off but he remains quite persistent and manages to convince the man to accept his offer.
And so it goes: Gabriel begins working at the shop, cleaning and arranging stuff, and he eventually earns the rubber shoes. He happens to run into Bianca at the market and gladly hands her the shoes and apologizes. Bianca then decides to forgive him.
They’re caught in the rain on their way home and upon learning that Bianca would be scolded by her mother if she gets home late, Gabriel runs through the rain to retrieve an umbrella from the house and hurries back to give it to Bianca.
The next morning, Bianca asks Olsen about Gabriel when she doesn’t see him in school, only to learn that he had gotten sick from the rain. At the Villoria residence, Lola Lydia takes care of Gabriel, all the while scolding him for his recklessness. Bianca shows up to return the umbrella and figuring out that she’s the one her grandson is crushing on, Lydia begins interrogating her.
When Bianca notes that she’s a runner being trained by her mother Maila who was a former athlete and part of the Philippine Track and Field Team, Lydia speculates that Maila might know her son Rigor since he was also part of the very same team.
Apparently, Rigor has been missing for a while now.Bianca agrees to take Lydia to see her mother so she could talk to her. Somewhere in the city, Roman scolds his son Carlos for getting an “average grade” and scoring 80s in his exams. He compares him to the driver’s son who scored 90s and Victoria his wife comes to Carlos’ defense.
Roman bans Carlos from watching TV or playing video games on weekends until he gets higher grades. After the little boy is dismissed to his room, Victoria expresses her misgivings as to how her husband treats their son and Roman justifies his actions.
Lola Lydia comes to see Maila in the company of Gabriel. Maila recounts the bad luck she had been dealt with that put an end to her sports career. She then asks Lydia about her son. Lola Lydia recounts how Rigor had brought home a baby boy he had claimed to be his and then vanished without a trace.
Maila thinks her friend Victoria might know where Rigor is, and Gabriel begins asking questions about his father. Joey and Ben arrive home and Maila introduces them to the Villorias as her husband and father respectively. After Lydia makes known the reason for her visit, Ben jokingly begins making advances at her.
Some time later, Bianca and Gabriel sit by the shore talking about their shared dreams of finishing school and taking good care of their family. Bianca thanks Gabriel for the new pair of shoes he had bought for her. Gabriel gladly decides to teach her how to swim so she doesn’t drown like the last time.
Later that night, Bianca also teaches Gabriel some basics of running. Victoria and Maila simultaneously coach their kids as they practice on the track. Gabriel goes about doing his petty jobs and later teaches Bianca how to ride a bike. When the rains come, he produces an umbrella from his backpack to shelter them both and a dramatic scene ensues.
During a school event, Bianca surpasses her mates in a race. She and Gabriel begin spending more time together, helping each other out with everything. Victoria takes Carlos to his swimming class and the coach suggests that she let him compete in a triathlon since he seems to have potential and could become a champion.
Carlos likes the sound of that and wants to do it. Bianca needs 300 pesos for her school project and since her mother had already used up her money to buy food, Ben and Joey sacrifice the little they have left to contribute so she could finish her studies.
Bianca appreciates her family and promises to buy them a house once she becomes a famous athlete so they wouldn’t need to be moving around. Roman second-guesses Carlos’ intention to join the triathlon and insists that he focus on his studies and graduate on top of his class.
When Victoria mentions that their son can excel in both fields, Roman strongly admonishes her. A frustrated Carlos decides to continue his training all the same, though with apparent frustration.
During dinner at the Agbayani residence, Bianca admires her parents’ affection toward each other and hopes that her groom would be as hardworking, kind and sweet like her father. In school, Gabriel asks Bianca about the meaning of the word “devoted” and he teases her with it after she explains.
While working at the construction site, Joey ends up in an unfortunate accident and gets wounded pretty bad. Bianca is called out from school and goes to see her father at the hospital. She and the rest of the family are distressed with Joey’s condition which only worsens as the doctor soon informs them that they need to transfer him to a better equipped hospital in Subic so he could be operated on.
The Agbayanis begin to pack up their stuff to leave for Subic tomorrow and as Gabriel helps out Bianca, she tells him not to drop by the house tomorrow since she doesn’t want to cry. Later when Gabriel is leaving, Bianca goes after him and they share a dramatic hug in the outpouring rain.
The next morning, the Villorias strive to cheer up Gabriel on account of Bianca’s family’s move to the city. When it starts raining, Gabriel grabs his umbrella and hurries to the bus station just in time to catch the bus the Agbayanis are riding in.
He calls out to Bianca and when she pokes her head out the window, he hands her the umbrella. After they exchange goodbyes, Bianca promises to write him frequently. While Joey is admitted at a hospital, Carlos manages to convince his mother to support him since he really wants to run.
Lola Lydia and her grandson arrive at a hospital in Subic to ask of Joey, only to learn that he had been transferred to another hospital in Manila after his conditioned worsened. In the meantime, Bianca sits by her father in his hospital room and strives to make him wake up.
Eventually, Joey regains consciousness but Bianca’s happiness and relief is shortlived as the heart monitor begins going off the chart. Bianca begins crying out for help, though Joey dies all the same.
After moving into a new place in Manila, Bianca writes to Gabriel about everything that has happened, hoping that they can make their friendship last by writing letters to each other. In Zambales, a storm compels Gabriel to evacuate their home with his grandma.
